General Overview of the Program:
The ESL program at Brooklyn Amity is focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It is designed to enrich students’ knowledge of both the English language and American culture. The skills that are practiced in all of the ESL courses that are offered at our school help to prepare readiness for the TOEFL Junior Exam.
Grammar classes offered at Brooklyn Amity School focus on promoting communication in the English language, both verbally and in writing. Students examine and practice using a variety of verb tenses and sentence structures which allow them to express themselves in both everyday and academic situations.
The ESL Vocabulary course will expose students to practical academic terms that will aid them in their future courses at Amity School and further studies. In this course, students will learn to spell, pronounce, define, classify, and apply new vocabulary words in various subject areas and topics. By the end of this course, the students will be able to communicate effectively through writing and speaking including rich conversational and academic vocabulary terms.
Reading and Writing:
Reading and Writing classes at our school are designed to strengthen students’ reading comprehension and writing skills. Students read and discuss an assortment of genres, as well as write about them. They apply ideas from the texts to their own experiences and prior knowledge. In addition, students also study a range of writing genres and gain skills which will help to strengthen their ability to write academically.
Listening and Speaking:
The ESL listening and Speaking course is designed to allow students the opportunity to practice their listening comprehension skills. In addition, they will be encouraged to participate in group discussions, present research information, share their ideas about new and exciting topics, and present various types of speeches. By the end of this course, the students will feel comfortable listening to and speaking English with native-like fluency.
American Ethics and Culture:
American Ethics and Culture is a class that gives students insight into key parts of American history, as well as knowledge of common customs and traditions in America. Students enrolled in this class will enhance their skills for communicating effectively with others in America.
Brooklyn Amity School ESL Department utilizes TOEFL Junior in the beginning, middle and end of the school year to make sure students reach the highest level of English language proficiency. Intended for students ages 11+, the TOEFL Junior® tests are an objective and reliable measure of your students’ English communication skills. Based on the rich heritage of the TOEFL® test and best practices in English-language testing, TOEFL Junior tests can help you pinpoint the students’ strengths and challenges.
Setting a strong foundation for your students early makes all the difference. That’s why it’s important to have an accurate understanding of their English-language skills that can help you guide them to reach their full potential.
