Brooklyn Amity School Students Help Plant 400 Trees at Idlewild Park

Brooklyn Amity School Students at Idlewild Park Along with Other Volunteers

This past weekend, Brooklyn Amity School’s high school students participated in an inspiring tree-planting event at Idlewild Park in Queens, NY. Alongside volunteers from across the city, our students helped plant over 400 Rhus glabra (Sumac) trees, contributing to the ongoing efforts to preserve and restore this beautiful natural area.

A Unique Park with a Rich History

Idlewild Park is a 160-acre urban nature preserve located near John F. Kennedy Airport. Known for its wetlands, forests, and meadows, the park plays a critical role in protecting New York City’s environment. Once threatened by urban development, Idlewild Park has become a shining example of conservation and ecological restoration. The park is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, providing essential habitats and helping to maintain biodiversity in a bustling urban area.

Why Tree Planting Matters

Tree planting is a powerful way to improve the environment, especially in areas like Idlewild Park. Trees help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They reduce air pollution, control flooding, and provide shelter for wildlife. Idlewild Park’s wetlands also act as a natural barrier, protecting nearby neighborhoods from storm surges and erosion.

The Importance of Rhus glabra (Sumac)

Rhus glabra, or smooth sumac, is a resilient and beneficial tree species. Known for its ability to thrive in tough conditions, sumac is ideal for Idlewild Park’s restoration projects. Its deep roots help stabilize soil, preventing erosion, while its berries provide food for birds and other wildlife. The vibrant red foliage and berries of the sumac tree also add beauty to the landscape, enhancing the park’s natural charm.

Making a Difference Together

Our students, along with other volunteers, arrived early in the morning, ready to make a difference. Over the course of the day, they planted hundreds of trees, working hard to support Idlewild Park’s mission of conservation and sustainability. This hands-on experience allowed our students to learn about the importance of environmental stewardship while directly contributing to the health of their community.
