Clean Water For All
Imagine if every time you were thirsty, you had to walk several kilometers to get a glass of water. This is the daily reality for millions of people in Africa, who walk an average of six kilometers each day to collect water. Often, this water comes from unprotected sources such as rivers, lakes, and ponds, which can carry waterborne diseases that are among the leading causes of illness and death, especially among children.
On May 19, 2024, Brooklyn Amity School's high school students joined Embrace Relief for the third annual H₂Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walk-a-Thon at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. This event aimed to raise awareness about the critical issue of clean water access and support Embrace Relief's initiatives to provide clean water to those in need.
Event Highlights:
The event was a fun, family-friendly, and dog-friendly walk along the scenic Hudson River. By participating, our students supported Embrace Relief’s Clean Water Initiative and Fountains of Hope project, which currently provides more than 900,000 people in Africa with clean water. Since 2013, Embrace Relief has built over 850 wells, creating life-saving changes, improving community health, enhancing educational outcomes, empowering women and girls, and boosting local economies.
About Embrace Relief’s Award-Winning ‘Fountains of Hope’ Program
Water wells are a critical solution to the clean water crisis in Africa, but building new wells is expensive, and nearly half of all wells in sub-Saharan Africa are broken at any given time due to a lack of maintenance and harsh environmental conditions.
In 2021, Embrace Relief launched the “Fountains of Hope” well reconstruction program, providing an efficient solution by reconstructing wells at about one-third the cost of new ones, while delivering the same quality and quantity of water. Since its inception, more than 100 wells have been rebuilt, restoring the flow of clean water to communities. In 2023, the Fountains of Hope program received a Third Place “Pioneers in SDG” award from the Journalists and Writers Foundation, a UN-affiliated civil society organization, recognizing the impactful change the program is creating.
A Proud Moment for Our Students
We are incredibly proud of our high school students for their commitment to this cause. Their participation in the 5K Walk-a-Thon exemplified the values of compassion and community service that we strive to instill at Brooklyn Amity School.
By walking together, they not only had fun but also made a meaningful contribution to a global solution. The event was a testament to their dedication to making a positive impact in the world.
